EDU 645

WELCOME TO EDU 645-002

MIC PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The UK College of Education uses the conceptual framework of research, reflection, learning, and leading. Students in EDU 645 will have ample opportunities to work through this framework to study best practices and the foundations that surround these practices as they analyze, discuss, and apply their learning practically in partner schools and classrooms at local secondary school sites. Through discussions, blogs, observations, and projects students will reflect on what makes a great teacher and good teaching and learning environments then apply this information directly in school classrooms. Through this course students will begin to recognize the importance of lifelong learning, and be ready to both learn from, and lead colleagues in their schools, districts, and states. The goal of this course is to prepare teachers who will work among diverse populations and constantly be in tune with best practices and their implementation as a way to improve education in Kentucky and beyond.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Students will participate with other secondary education majors from a variety of disciplines in the reflective study of adolescent behavior, secondary school curriculum, school law, learning theory, learning styles, effective teaching and learning, instructional technology, working with special populations, cultural diversity in the schools, school context, and professional development. Students will spend time in the schools applying learned concepts.

PREREQUISITE(S): Admission to the M.I.C. Program

WELCOME

To Foundations of Pedagogical Theory & Practice in Secondary Sschools. I hope your summer was refreshing and you are back on campus ready for an exciting and enlightening semester. On Blackboard under EDU 645-002 “course information” you will find: A calendar with the schedule of meeting dates and times, the Syllabus with course requirements, the list of assignments with rubrics, and the tentative discussion topics for our class discussion board and online meetings.

Because emails can be lost or overlooked, please submit questions as an email using EDU 645-002 in the subject heading. I will check emails and comments daily and try to respond within 48 hours. We can also communicate through twitter under ElinorLBrown using the hash tag #EDU645.

Submit all assignments in blackboard under assignments. This way, you will have my comments and access to your grades as soon as I have completed the assessment.

I look forward to meeting each of you on Tuesdays, beginning August 28, from 1:00pm—3:30pm in Dickey Hall room 323. As we progress, we will begin to meet on UKconnect instead of face to face on campus. I will let you know when we will begin meeting on line. The URL for access to our online meetings is https://connect.uky.edu/edu645-002/

Cheers,

Dr. Brown
